Before appearing for nurse aide certification examination, aspirants need to take state accredited nursing training. The Department of Health and Social Services prepares the curriculum. The length of programs is of 85 hours. The training is divided between thirty-five hours in a class, where students have to pay attention to lectures. Fifty hours are spent in a clinical setting, where they get hands-on experience.
The nursing assistant courses are offered at long term care facilities, community colleges, clinics, nursing homes, technical schools, etc. The in-class lecture educate potential CNAs about anatomy, infection control, advanced patient care, physiology, medical terminologies, prevention of infection, etc. Clinical session teaches the students about assisting patients with daily activities, like bathing, feeding and grooming; measuring temperature, blood pressure and pulse rate; transferring patients, etc. Applicants must take and pass an additional class including knowledge about AIDS and HIV.
The requirements for enrolling in nurse aide programs are: GED or high school diploma, proficiency in speaking, reading and writing English, clean criminal record and a proof declaring that you are free from any contagious disease. Besides this, you should also have empathy, compassion, endurance and a wish to assist others.
Depending on the type of school or college, aspirants ought to spend $400 to $2,000 for the training. However, scholarships and grants are provided by some institutes that will help you to cover the entire cost of your nursing assistant education program. Candidates can also opt for online CNA classes, in case, they are facing time constraints.
